Introduction to Rio de Janeiro

Music and Passion are always the fashion here in Rio de Janeiro, and not just in Copacabana. Having been the backdrop for many films, and having had countless songs written about her and her inhabitants, Rio certainly lives up to the name given to her by her own people; The Marvellous City.

In January 1502, Portuguese Explorer, Gaspar de Lemos, mistook the Guanabara Bay for a river and named the region Rio de Janeiro. It could well have been called Baía de Janeiro had he known the geography of the land. Sandwiched between the mountains and the sea, Rio grew upwards and outwards, and continues to do so.

Rio de Janeiro has an abundance of music, culture and art; sand, sea and surf; pleasure, leisure and relaxation. Whatever you're into, a combination of any of these things (if not all, and maybe more!) ensures you an unforgettable experience.

Famed for the carnival which takes place annually, around lent, this is a hectic time for the City. The samba schools are adding the finishing touches to their parades. The tourists are arriving, and the cariocas are leaving for nearby retreats. Away from the 5 days of frenzied activity that will follow.

But whatever time of the year you visit Rio, this is guaranteed. Beautiful City, beautiful people, beautiful weather, beautiful memories.
