Introduction to Santa Monica

One of the most agreeable parts of the sprawling Los Angeles metropolis is the colourful seaside city of Santa Monica. With its TV-friendly location and year-round sun, the famous promenade and its pier is the backdrop to many a movie and a perfect place to stay on any visit to LA.

The turn-of-the-century pier is the focal point to the town, with its view along the cost to Malibu and Venice, and its funfair attractions. The promenade linking it to the city - although used as a base for many of the local homeless - is a fantastically landscaped walkway and full of youthful sorts rollerblading and strolling.

A little inland is the pedestrianised Third Street Promenad, which poses as a haunt for the arty types with its art and bookstores, and trendy cafes. At night, the street comes alive with bars, restaurants and nightclubs, and a scene more reminiscent of a Caribbean resort than a pollution-infested city.

The city-within-a-city boasts numerous sights, and easy links to the rest of Los Angeles. However it is the easy availability of a relaxing time that captures most. The fact that you could bump into a Hollywood star is almost irrelevant when you realise you could be one of the stars yourself.

Hotels and restaurants cover the board in price and quality. Read some of our reviews and links for further information.
