Introduction to Prince Edward County

Prince Edward County is a little island oasis conveniently located in south eastern Ontario between the cities of Toronto and Ottawa and a two hour drive from the U.S. border. It is situated on Lake Ontario and has a population of about 23,000.

Prince Edward County as a vacation destination can be summed up in one word: “relaxing.” There is no hustle and bustle here. It is a tranquil, laidback and breathtakingly beautiful area dotted with elms and maples and composed of close knit communities. The people of “the County”- as it is affectionately known as - are the salt of the earth and it would be difficult to find a friendlier more down to earth folk anywhere. If you love nature, the arts, and are a wine connoisseur then Prince Edward County must make your places to visit list.

If you prefer a fast paced, action filled type of vacation then Prince Edward County probably won’t be your cup of tea. In other words it’s no Vegas! A stress free, relaxing holiday is the reason that most people choose to visit Prince Edward County. It is a great place just to layback and do nothing but listen to the birds sing and chipmunks chirp.

For years Prince Edward County was a well kept secret but not any more. These days it’s being compared to Niagara on the Lake or the Muskokas. However the big difference between Prince Edward County and other tourist areas is that “the County” has maintained its small town appeal. It remains relatively untarnished by commercialism and exorbitant real estate prices while continuing to grow in popularity.

Prince Edward County is United Empire Loyalist settlement and has the second largest Loyalist architecture in Ontario. As a young lawyer, Canada’s first Prime Minister John A. MacDonald lived and worked in Prince Edward County.

In recent years many writers, artists and creative types have been enticed by the County’s charms. They visited, fell in love with and eventually moved to Prince Edward County in order to find peace, quiet and solitude. The diversified scenery including vast marshes and wetlands are very inspirational and have served as a backdrop for many film productions in recent years.

With wineries sprouting up everywhere, beautiful golden brown beaches, spas and artists descending on its vast and spectacular, hilly and winding countryside, Prince Edward County is finally on the map!
