Trieste Adriatic Coast, Italy ![]()
Introduction to Trieste Nestled on the Adriatic coast in the most north-easterly part of Italy lies the city of Trieste. In the past it has had its fair share of rulers, from the Austro-Hungarian Empire to the Slovenians, and is now in the ownership of Italy. It has been home to James Joyce, Hemingway, Freud and Rilke. The busy industrial port is to many the first impression of this sunny city, but there is much more to the place than ships and cargo. Slavic is still spoken in the narrow meandering streets and fine Slavic cuisine is served. Yet all of the joys of Italy fill its Neoclassical architecture and local beach resorts. The Canale Grande cuts through the city from the waterfront, and divides newer Città Nuova from the older part of town, centering on its Roman and medieval history. The Piazza dell'Unità d'Italia is the largest piazza in Italy. Overlooking the city is the 15th-Century Castello di San Giusto,
and 265 Steps of the Giants (Scala dei Giganti) can be ascended
to the Piazza della Cattedrale which overlooks the sea and modern
downtown Trieste. |
