Ischia
Introduction to Ischia The mob racing to Capri's overpriced charms usually overlook its neighbour, Ischia. Pity. They could have explored a serene island, rich in history, architecture and scenery, where natural hot springs bubble on ridges overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea. Ischia's dramatic landscape was the backdrop for The Talented Mr Ripley. Cliffs swoop down to sandy beaches, pastel houses cluster in small villages. Bougainvillaea seethes over white-washed walls, bells chime over orange groves and the turquoise sky reflects the gentle sea. Geothermal water vents make swimming possible most of the year, especially after basking in a nearby fumarole (plume of steam). Ischia has a warm, dry Mediterranean climate, averaging 45-55 degrees in January. And to top it all off: your hotel room could be cheaper than a cocktail on Capri.
