Guide to Annecy Annecy lies at the northern end of Lake Annecy (Lac d'Annecy to the French) in south-east France. The large town is built upon a series of canals which filter water into the lake, which is surrounded by the wonderful landscape of the Alps.
Old Annecy is the area immediately surrounding the lake and canals, and is a place of narrow winding streets and buildings dating back to the 12th century. Its castle dominates the skyline on the hillside and offers fantastic views over the rooftops and lake. Annecy once replaced Geneva as the regional capital gaining significant prosperity. Today its prosperity lies in tourism which flourishes in the warm summer months and barely diminishes in the winter due to the proximity of the ski resorts of the Alps.
Annecy is ideally situated for trips around Lake Annecy - either by road around the various villages along its shores, or on a lake cruise originating from the town. Whatever the reason for your visit to Annecy, be sure
to make time to visit its old churches, take pictures of the seemingly
endless vistas, and eat at one of the many canal-side resaurants and cafes.
