Salzburg Austria
Introduction to Salzburg Nestled tightly into a meander on the
Salzach River is the medieval city of Salzburg, steeped in history from
the great romantic period in European history. This is a city of church
spires, Mozart, castles, empires and in its latter day its hills
came alive with The Sound of Music. The city is located close to the border with Germany and is set against the backdrop of the Alps' foothills. The western side of the river is where the history is, and the eastern side is the more modern (yet still old by many standards) quarter of the city. In its pleasant quiet atmosphere, Salzburg has many an opportunity to explore. You can visit the house in which Mozart was born, and the one in which he lived with his family from 1773 until 1780; the looming castle Hohensalzburg Fortress is open to visitors, who can tour the ancient defences; the Residenz can also be visited. It has been home to the cream of Salzburg society for 700 years. If you can escape the cheap and imposing tourist trade plying their Sound of Music and Mozart merchandise at every opportunity, do make good use of your time by experiencing a classical concert or one of the city's famous beer gardens.
